The Bible doesn't make a lot of sense.
Any atheist who reads the bible gets validated in the very first chapter. That's where they read about Adam & Eve and the fruit. The atheist immediately thinks to himself, "Wow. I'd never kick my own children out of the house for eating something that I brought into the house in the first place, and left within their reach. Their god must be a real asshole."
Adam and Eve were also completely unqualified to keep up their end of the bargain. They had not eaten from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil so there was no way for them to know that disobeying god was wrong. Additionally, they were told that the punishment would be death, yet they had never seen anything die -- they had no idea what that meant.
They didn't understand right from wrong and they didn't understand the consequences. Even a human court wouldn't convict.
At the personal level, religion is great way of cheering people up. As soon as get above the personal level, churches are a a social evil.
Love the (The Simpson's) Springfield Church Mission Statement - "We add God to Your Misery"
Jeremy Clarkson attacked Archbishop of Canterbury whose Xmas sermon went along the lines that everyone who drives a big car or flies to Florida for a holiday is damaging the planet and so is going to hell. JC points out ("I tell you this beardie") that this guy also believes that Jesus fed 5000 people with 5 fish and a couple of loaves of bread. And you'd be hard-pressed to name 500 victims of global warming, whereas victims of various rel feuds number in 100's of millions. If really want to make Britain a beacon of civilization should just close the Church of England
The god of the OT is ludicrously savage, vengeful, preoccupied with ethnic cleansing, infanticide, slavery, whipping, rape, stoning and capital punishment - all apparently from a 'loving' god who gets very worried about people having sex.
Bible is full of stuff we no longer accept
Inconvenient Biblical texts
If you're going to ignore the section of Leviticus that bans about tattoos, pork, shellfish, round haircuts, polyester and football, how can you possibly turn around and quote Leviticus 18:22 (You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.) as irrefutable law?
But that's me trying to introduce logic to religious fanaticism (or, at least, trying to counter some mix of ignorance, bigotry and narcissism with logic). And I should probably know better.
Some Christians will tell you that they don't have to obey The Old Testament instructions because Jesus had changed the rules. But to do that they have to ignore the instructions from the New Testament such as:
It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid. Luke 16:17
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness... 2 Timothy 3:16
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law (John 7:19) and For the law was given by Moses,... (John 1:17)....the scripture cannot be broken. (John 10:35)
But the New Testament has inconvenient instructions too ...
Divorce. The Bible is very clear on this one: No divorcing. You can't do it. Because when you marry someone, according to Mark 10:8, you are no longer two, but one flesh. And, Mark 10:9 reads, What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.
Mark gets even more hardcore about it a few verses later, in Mark 10:11-12, And He said to them, 'Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.'
Women Obey Your Husbands
Ephesians 5: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Colossians 3: Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Wear Hats When You Pray
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the husband is the head of his wife, and God is the head of Christ. Any man who prays or prophesies with something on his head disgraces his head, but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled disgraces her head--it is one and the same thing as having her head shaved. For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaved, she should wear a veil. For a man ought not to have his head veiled, since he is the image and reflection of God; but woman is the reflection of man. Indeed, man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man. For this reason a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. (NRSV, 1 Corinthians 11:3-10)
These are all instructions from the NT, but Christians ignore the bits they don't like.
Slavery The Bible clearly approves of slavery in many passages, and it goes so far as to tell how to obtain slaves, how hard you can beat them, and when you can have sex with the female slaves.
Many Jews and Christians will try to ignore the moral problems of slavery by saying that these slaves were actually servants or indentured servants. Many translations of the Bible use the word "servant", "bondservant", or "manservant" instead of "slave" to make the Bible seem less immoral than it really is. While many slaves may have worked as household servants, that doesn't mean that they were not slaves who were bought, sold, and treated worse than livestock.
The following passage shows that slaves are clearly property to be bought and sold like livestock.
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)
You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)
Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)
Every religion believes they have the sole correct path to heaven
So which of these is the "correct" version, then? There can only be one.

and that's just a few of the christian ones. By one count there have been over 10,000 religions through history, and the list is growing by about 3 a week
Here's one example: Jung Myung-Seok split with the Moonies, having learned that people will believe any crazy shit you tell them, Jung Myung-Seok started his own church called Jesus Morning Star. Apparently, coming up with a Church name that had the same initials as him was enough hard work for Jung, because he basically stole his entire theology from the Moonies. Of course, there were three minor variations, each one more lazy and shameless than the last:Jung Myung-Seok split with Moonies, having learned that people will believe any crazy shit you tell them, Jung Myung-Seok started his own church called Jesus Morning Star. Apparently, coming up with a Church name that had the same initials as him was enough hard work for Jung, because he basically stole his entire theology from the Moonies. Of course, there were three minor variations, each one more lazy and shameless than the last:
1. Jung Myung-Seok was the Messiah, not that Moon asshole.
2. Original sin, originated when Eve had sex with Satan, and could only be defeated by allowing the Savior into your heart and body.
3. The Savior was Jung Myung Seok's penis.
In fact, pretty much every aspect of the JMS theology ran through Jung Myung Seok's penis. He even instituted a "can't get yours till I get mine" policy in which couples wanting to marry had to recruit 3 new members, preferably tall and hot the way the Messiah liked them.
And so, with all these different versions of "god":"I contend that we are both Atheists. I just believe in one fewer god then you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." Stephen F. Roberts
